Virtual commemoration

On April 8, a virtual commemorative event on the theme of “Ilse Aichinger 100” was held in cooperation with the German Cultural Institute Tartu and German Studies Department of the University of Tartu as part of the cultural festival “German Spring“.
Marko Pajevič, professor of German studies at the University of Tartu explained the life and work of the author and gave an introduction to various aspects of her works. He also spoke about the reception of the author’s work in Austria and highlighted her importance for post-war German-language literature.
MA students of the German Department of the University of Tartu read representative texts (poems, short stories, essays and aphorisms) by Ilse Aichinger.
The contribution gave the audience a detailed insight into the life and work of Ilse Aichinger.
Marko Pajevič has been a visiting professor of German studies at the University of Tartu since January 2018.
His teaching focuses on 20th and 21st century literature, in addition to general courses in intellectual history. He has published books on Paul Celan and Franz Kafka, among others.
A second commemorative event is planned as a face-to-face event in Tallinn in the fall of this year.
